Hello all,
The IFOMPT has plans to change its name from “The International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists” to “The International Federation of Musculoskeletal Physical Therapists”. The AAOMPT has voiced its opposition to the name change, and we cannot agree more with the AAOMPT’s standpoint on this name change. Please read Haideh Plock’s email on this topic below, which explains this situation in detail. Haideh is the USA’s IFOMPT delegate. Thanks, Pieter
I am writing to you on a topic of great concern for AAOMPT (The American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists) and the future of manual therapy. As you may or may not be aware, IFOMPT (the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists) has called a special meeting In August to vote on a motion to change the organization’s name from “The International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists” to “The International Federation of Musculoskeletal Physical Therapists”.
AAOMPT has been aware of the potential for the name change and has given feedback to IFOMPT through Elaine Lonnemann’s role on the IFOMPT Name and Identity Task Force. I have been involved as MO Delegate in the virtual discussions with other MO’s. Our concerns have been voiced but Elaine was the only member of the task force in opposition so we would appreciate your support in contacting international friends who may have not heard about this or who could communicate concern to the IFOMPT executive.
AAOMPT is opposed to this motion for the following reasons:
1. IFOMPT was founded specifically as the home for Manual and Manipulative Therapy
2. The term musculoskeletal limits the scope of practice since it represents a small portion of the biopsychosocial approach of OMPT and does not include other areas of OMPT expertise such as neurological, vascular screening, and pain science education
3. This motion potentially puts AAOMPT in a difficult situation with regards to our relationship with APTA and the AOPT (Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy).
4. We have not heard clear reasoning regarding how IFOMPT’s current name limits our standing with World Physiotherapy or the World Health Organization , which is one of the arguments being put forth in favor of this change.
5. Deleting Orthopaedic Manipulative from the name sends a clear message that IFOMPT is moving away from advocacy for a ‘hands on’ approach and more toward advocacy for a ‘hands off’ approach .
6. The current name of IFOMPT and definition of OMPT has allowed for our evolution as a specialty area of physical therapy and will allow for even greater growth and evolution in the future to truly be the “global leaders in OMPT excellence”.
This change will affect our brand as manual physical therapists and specifically in the US may affect our ability to defend our practice of manipulation.
Below is the list of current Member Organizations and their respective contact information. Also, the letter Ken Olson wrote to all Member Organizations is attached for your reference.
If you know any of the individuals on this list or have personal connections with any of these MO countries, please reach out to them and express your concerns regarding this motion.
